Who, What, Where, When?

With the unique alteration to the 2020s Masters Tournament, the 2021 Tournament is greatly anticipated by golfing fans. At Golf Gear Direct, we want to bring our golfers the relevant information and the ‘Who’s Hot?’ this year!

Held once again at the infamous Augusta National Golf Club, this year’s tournament features some top contenders including Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Rory Mcllroy, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and many more! Whilst Tiger Woods won’t be attending, there are still many great names to watch out for who could win the famous green jacket and the tournaments prize money.

Whilst The Masters is being held in the US, we have done the research for you and found out the best places to catch up on the action from your own home in the UK. Live footage will be aired on Sky Sports Golf from Thursday to Sunday however if you aren’t subscribed, you can catch up on the main events on BBC Two as well as BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra and BBC Sounds. Alternatively, the main event coverage will be available on BBC Iplayer.

From a perspective of odds on who is a favourite to win, the top five are a great choice to back with the following stats:

  • Dustin Johnson: 8/1
  • Bryson DeChambeau: 9/1
  • Justin Thomas: 10/1
  • Jon Rahm: 11/1
  • Jordan Spieth: 12/1

(As of 29.03.21 at Paddy Power).

Furthermore, last year Kyle Porter at CBS Golf compared each previous winner’s strokes gained tee to green to determine if the golfers’ performance leading up to the tournament were an indication of their likeliness of winning. It appears that each winner since 2006 had around 2.0 strokes gained tee to green, suggesting that they were playing at an elite level during this time. This could be a noticeable indication to watch up-and-coming golfers and checking their stats and their official world golf ranking before the event begins.

For example:

  • 2020 — Dustin Johnson: 2.88
  • 2019 — Tiger Woods: 1.82
  • 2018 — Patrick Reed: 1.26
  • 2017 — Sergio Garcia: 2.14
  • 2016 — Danny Willett: 2.01
  • 2015 — Jordan Spieth: 1.67

Whilst many of these players have taken part in previous tournaments such as the PGA Tour, Ryder Cup or the Open Championship, it could be a year that the title is taken by an underdog, sneaking under the radar.

With that, here is a player break down for the top three with the best odds:

Dustin Johnson

America’s Dustin Johnson, this year’s favourite to win, has been a professional golfer for over 14 years and now has an amazing twenty-four PGA Tour victories under his belt. As the most recent winner of The Masters Tournament in the later months of last year, Johnson is currently number one in the Official World Golf Ranking. Dustin is a part of Team TaylorMade and has referenced their products as having ‘outperformed anything else’ that he has ever played with.

Bryson DeChambeau

5th in the Official World Golf Ranking, Bryson DeChambeau is certainly one to watch at this year’s Masters with eight PGA Tour Victories in a short professional career of only five years. Bryson is known to focus on the science and calculations behind golf, being dubbed the ‘Mad Scientist’ for his experiments with golf equipment.

Justin Thomas

Coming second in the Official World Rankings, behind Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas is a worthy contender this year after winning THE PLAYERS Championship 2021. With 14 PGA Tour Victories and 59 Top 10 finishes across his career, Thomas has displayed great skill in previous tournaments and with a 10/1 odds, is a likely candidate for a top-three Masters champion.

The event itself will be held at Augusta National Golf Club, which has a rich heritage of golfing tournaments and each hole has its own story and name. With a total of 18 holes, the course was formerly a plant nursery and celebrates its history with now over 80,000 plants of over 350 varieties. The course itself spans 4.3 miles and has had 87 years of masters tournaments. This year, the club is offering a Taste of the Masters food package to its guests that can be preordered online.

We will be posting updates throughout the tournament itself so keep your eyes peeled on our social media pages for hot Masters news. With golf courses now open in the UK, it will be great to watch the professionals do their thing whilst we can get some fresh air and practice too.
