Less than a week after putting the new Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 forged irons in his bag, three-time Major winner Padraig Harrington won his 15th European Tour title at the Portugal Masters at the Oceanico Victoria Clube de Golf on Sunday with a masterclass of accurate approach play and solid putting.
The popular Irishman, who has played Wilson Staff clubs since 1998 in one of golf’s longest partnerships, birdied six holes in a bogey-free final round 65 to finish on -23 and win by a shot from defending champion Andy Sullivan. It was his first victory on the European Tour since 2008 and could move him back into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
Harrington, who is renowned for his attention to detail when choosing equipment, placed the new V6 irons in his bag during a practice round earlier this week and was immediately convinced that they would deliver a good score in tournament play.
When asked about the V6 irons Padraig said ‘I tried out the new FG Tour V6 irons on Monday and loved them. They were so good, I put them straight into the bag…I tried to be really aggressive …I just tried to go after every pin I could and make birdies. I have a pretty good short game that was on form this week. No matter where I hit it, I felt like I could get it up and down.’
*Along with the V6 Irons (to be released in the new year!) Harrington also was equipped with the ‘Infinity South Side Putter, The D200 (17°) Hybrid, a V4 Utility 4-iron and two FG Tour PMP wedges (A 52° & 54°)
